WINE 1.2 Released With 64bit Application Support - Ubuntu Installation Instructions

WINE 1.2 has been released, the new version including (finally!) 64bit application support:

Loading and running 64-bit Windows applications is now supported on x86-64 processors.

There are now two flavors of Wine prefixes, 32-bit and 64-bit. 32-bit prefixes only support 32-bit applications, while 64-bit prefixes support both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. The prefix flavor is set at prefix creation time and cannot be changed afterwards, since all the files and registry entries are in different locations. Backwards compatibility is ensured by considering all prefixes created with older Wine versions to be 32-bit.

The new version comes with 23,000 changes and more than 3,000 bug-fixes and a new icon set based on Tango.

You can read the whole Wine 1.2 (stable) changelog, here.

Please note that these changes are since the latest Wine stable release - 1.0, so if you're using the Wine PPA, there are only bug fixes in the Wine 1.2 final version.

Upgrade to WINE 1.2 in Ubuntu from a PPA

Upgrade to WINE 1.2 (Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx only!) using the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If you want to use WINE 1.2 with PulseAudio, there's a separate PPA for this:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:c-korn/ppa && sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
