UbuntuOne Gets Contacts Mobile Phone Sync Support [But It's Not Free]

ubuntuone preferences dialog

A recent message on the Ubuntu One mailing list announces that Canonical has teamed up with Funambol, an established software stack that synchronizes thousands of mobile phones and other devices who have built a community around different client plugins, virtually supporting the majority of the existing software on all platforms that have contacts (Thunderbird, Outlook, Mac OS X Mail, etc).

That means that UbuntuOne (which finally added bookmarks sync support 3 days ago) gets mobile phones sync support, but unfortunately the new service will only be part of the UbuntuOne paid plans. The service can already be used by everyone as it's already in public alpha. If you want to try it out, you'll get a free 30-days trial but these 30 days of trial will only start counting once Ubuntu 10.04 LTS will be released so until then you can use it for free.

This new feature builds on the existing Contacts sync feature. Once your contacts have been synchronized between your computer and your Ubuntu One account, they are ready to be synchronized with your mobile phone.

Funambol offers a Thunderbird synchronization plugin so Evolution will not be the only choice for Ubuntu users who want to sync their contact with Ubuntu One. Funambol also supports synchronization with Microsoft Outlook on Windows and the Mac OS X Address Book application.

Ubuntu One mobile phone sync supports iPhone and Android phones as well as many (thousands) other devices. iPhone users will be glad to know that a new "Ubuntu One" app will be available any day now on the app store any day now, so all they'll have to do is install that and punch in their user/password, and they're ready to go.

Everything you need to know about this new service can be found @ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOne/PhoneSync/.
