Ubuntu Karmic: Make The Super Key Bring Down The Applications Menu

applications menu ubuntu karmic koala

In Ubuntu Jaunty, all you had to do was to go to System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts and edit the appropriate shortcut to be able to bring down the Applications menu using the Super Key (the key between left Alt and Ctrl).

This changed in Ubuntu Karmic Koala and now the Super Key must be used in combination with another key. But if you got used to using the Super Key for opening the Applications menu, there is a really easy work-around.

To modify this, open up a terminal and paste this:
gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/panel_main_menu --type string "Super_L"

"Super_L" means the Super Key on the left. If you have one on the right, you may change the command and use that one instead if you want.
